God’s Pocket Resort has signed the Sustainable Tourism 2030 Pledge, to demonstrate our commitment to improving the sustainability performance of our business between now and 2030. The UN World Tourism Organization defines sustainable tourism as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.” We commit to measuring and improving our sustainability performance in the following ways:
- We pledge to continuously measure our footprint to learn what areas can be improved upon in the future.
- We pledge to continue to invest in new and/or upgraded on-site renewable energy sources (for example, upgrading our current wind turbine) by 2030, further decreasing our reliability on fossil fuels and increasing the sustainability of GP’s energy sources.
- We pledge to maintain upcycled batteries for our micro-grid (rather than batteries newly manufactured for God’s Pocket Resort), in order to reduce the lifecycle footprint of our energy storage solution.
- We pledge to conduct regular waste audits to help make improvements where possible.
- We pledge to develop a resource that can educate visitors on how to reduce their own footprint by supporting activities in the area that are low-impact and regenerative.
- We pledge to develop a sustainable purchasing policy by supporting local entrepreneurs, and purchasing sustainable ocean conscious products (such as the use of OceanWise certified fish for the restaurant).
- We pledge to develop a policy of interaction between our guests and the environment here on Hurst Island, so that it is easy for visitors to care for their surroundings as much as we do.
